The Consumer Council said while food prices dropped there were increases in accommodation rentals, transportation as well as charges for water, power and fees for education and medical services that pushed up the cost of living for an average family by 5 percent.

* Proposed rates cap questioned (David Loughrey, Otago Daily Times)

Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin has questioned how a proposed rates cap could work, when different local authorities rate in different ways, and the amount rated varies widely, as does the level of infrastructure councils have.
